| BONE DENSITOMETRY
Bone densitometry is a test that quickly and accurately
measures the density of bone. It is used primarily to detect osteoporosis,
diseases in which the bone’s mineral content and density are
low and the risk of fractures is high.
How does bone densitometry work?
We send a very low dose of x-ray radiation through
predetermined body regions. The lumbar spine (lower back) and the
hip are the skeletal sites usually examined by bone densitometry.
A forearm may be used as an alternate site, when artifacts are present.
There is a sensor on the other side of the table that
measures how many of the x-rays pass directly though the bone and
how many are stopped by the bone. This information is then analyzed
and processed by the technologist and forwarded to our specially
trained radiologists for interpretation.
How do I prepare for my test?
If you think you may be pregnant, notify your physician
before taking the test. You do not have to change your daily routine
before this test. Eat, drink, and take your medicines as you normally
would. If you have had an imaging procedure of the stomach or intestines
using barium, you should wait 2-3 days until all the barium is gone
before your test.
What should I expect during my test?
You will lie on your back, on a padded table, in a
comfortable position. Once positioned by a skilled technologist,
a scanner arm will scan the appropriate exam sites, readily producing
the necessary images to diagnose your condition.
How do I get the results?
One of our board-certified radiologists will review
your results and immediately fax a preliminary report to your doctor.
The official final report will be sent to your doctor within 24-48
hours. Your doctor can then discuss the results with you in detail.
Who do I call with questions?
Questions about the results of your exam should be directed to your primary healthcare provider. For any other questions or concerns, please feel free to call us directly. (Find our numbers here.)
Note: Imaging Associates performs bone density screenings at our Valley locations (Mat-Su Trunk Road & Mat-Su Bogard Road) only.
