FAQ

What should I expect during an ultrasound exam?
Ultrasound exams are comfortable and noninvasive. We apply a small amount of gel to the skin and move a handheld device over the area being examined while images are captured in real time. The gel helps sound waves travel between the probe and your skin, allowing us to capture clear, accurate images. It is safe, water-based, and easily wiped away after the exam.

Is ultrasound safe?
Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and is considered safe for people of all ages, including during pregnancy.

Does an ultrasound hurt?
Ultrasound exams are generally painless. You may feel light pressure from the transducer, especially if we are imaging a tender area.

How long does an ultrasound appointment take?
Most ultrasound exams take 20–45 minutes, depending on the area being evaluated and the type of exam ordered.

Do I need to prepare for my ultrasound?
Preparation depends on the exam. Some ultrasounds require fasting or a full bladder. Our team will give you clear instructions when your appointment is scheduled.

Will I get results right away?
Your ultrasound images are interpreted by fellowship-trained radiologists from Alaska Radiology Associates. Results are sent directly to your provider, who will review them with you.

Can I return to normal activities afterward?
Yes. There are no restrictions after an ultrasound, and you can resume normal activities immediately.

What is Doppler ultrasound?
Doppler ultrasound evaluates blood flow through vessels and organs. It helps providers assess circulation and identify potential blockages or abnormalities.

What is the difference between 3D and 4D ultrasound?
3D ultrasound creates detailed still images, while 4D ultrasound shows live movement in real time. These are commonly used during pregnancy and for specific diagnostic needs.

Who performs my ultrasound exam?
Ultrasound exams at Imaging Associates are performed by experienced, registered sonographers who guide you through the exam and ensure high-quality imaging.

Who can I contact if I have questions before my appointment?
