FAQ

What is a breast ultrasound?
A breast ultrasound uses sound waves to create real-time images of breast tissue. It does not use radiation.

Why might my provider recommend a breast ultrasound?
It is often used to take a closer look at an area seen on a mammogram or felt during a physical exam, or when additional detail is needed.

Is breast ultrasound safe?
Yes. Ultrasound does not use radiation and is considered safe for all patients, including those who are pregnant.

What should I expect during the exam?
You will lie comfortably while a technologist applies warm gel to the skin and moves a small handheld device over the area being examined. The exam is typically quick and painless.

Do I need to prepare?
No special preparation is needed for a breast ultrasound.

Will this replace a mammogram?
Breast ultrasound is usually used as a complementary exam, not a replacement for screening mammography.

Who interprets my images?
All breast ultrasound exams are interpreted by fellowship-trained radiologists with expertise in breast imaging.
